The GENERAL A Exam: All CLC trade exam preparation programs utilize a combination of instructional textbooks with corresponding Audio and Video support materials and online practice exams.


NOTE!
If you are already a licensed contractor in good standing & wish to add an additional license, you only have to pass the trade exam. You are not required to take the Law and Business exam again!

PART 1 The Trade Exam

The General Engineering Manual: Briefly covers the major topics of the State exam including Concrete, Rough and Finish Carpentry, Masonry, Electrical, HVAC, and Excavation, Grading, and Paving. The manual also contains summaries from the California Building Code and National Electrical Code. The last section of the General Engineering Manual covers the Health and Safety Orders

The Audio/Video Lectures: The Math Review Lecture covers the math formulas in the first part of the General Engineering manual. The General Engineering lecture covers the topics addressed in the manual specific to the General Engineering trade exam. The Health and Safety Lecture covers the Health and Safety Orders at the end of the General Engineering manual. The General Engineering Review Questions Lecture covers the General Engineering Review Questions in the back of the manual.

The General Engineering Practice Exams: Please be sure that you study all of the practice exams. It is important to read and understand each question, and read every word of the explanations. It is necessary to learn the principles behind the question because the State’s questions may be worded differently.

The General Engineering Contractor’s Computer-Assisted Practice Tests: Our exam simulation software program loads directly onto your computer and presents questions one at a time, automatically scores your exam, presents you with a grade, and lists each question answered incorrectly along with the correct answer.

General Information:

A general engineering contractor is a contractor whose principal contracting business is in connection with fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, including the following divisions or subjects: irrigation, drainage, water power, water supply, flood control, inland waterways, harbors, docks and wharves, shipyards and ports, dams and hydroelectric projects, levees, river control and reclamation works, railroads, highways, streets and roads, tunnels, airports and airways, sewers and sewage disposal plants and systems, waste reduction plants, bridges, overpasses, underpasses and other similar works, pipelines and other systems for the transmission of petroleum and other liquid or gaseous substances, parks, playgrounds and other recreational works, refineries, chemical plants and similar industrial plants requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, powerhouses, power plants and other utility plants and installations, mines and metallurgical plants, land leveling and earthmoving projects, excavating, grading, trenching, paving and surfacing work and cement and concrete works in connection with the above mentioned fixed works.

 If you are not currently a licensed contractor then you are required to take and pass BOTH the Trade Exam and the Law and Business Exam. 

The Trade & The Law Exam

Our Law Manual, Audio and Video DVD’s and CD’s as well as our Computerized Final Exams are designed to work seamlessly together and are key to helping you master our study materials and pass your State exam.

There are two parts to the examination process. ALL qualifying individuals must pass BOTH the standard Law and Business examination as well as a second test covering the specific Trade or Certification Area for which they are applying. The Law & Business Exam is divided into eight major sections. These sections are:
1: Business Organization. 2: Business Financial. 3: Employment Requirements. 4: Bonds, Insurance, and Liens. 5: Contract Requirements and Execution. 6: Licensing Requirements. 7: Safety Requirements.
8: Public Works.

The manual is written in layperson’s language and includes sample forms as well as summaries and checklists to help students prepare for the State Exam. There are no complicated legal codes to decipher. Each section of the Law and Business manual is also backed up with both video and audio lectures to further broaden your understanding and expose you to multiple methods of explanation and memorization.
